The bioplastics sector is projected to more than double by 2028, reaching 7.43 million tonnes (European Bioplastics, 2024). While bioplastics present environmental benefits, their integration into existing waste management systems remains challenging. Achieving a truly circular approach to bioplastics is essential for sustainable development.
Join MAPP - AU, Department of Food Science - AU and Food & Bio Cluster Denmark in exploring practical pathways for integrating bioplastics into a circular economy, bringing together experts, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to discuss solutions that ensure the sector's sustainable growth.
One of the primary hurdles is effective sorting and recycling. In sectors like food packaging, where bioplastics enter consumer households, there is a critical need for clear disposal guidance. Many bioplastics are not easily distinguishable from fossil-based plastics at the household level, complicating their separation and proper waste management. Besides, bio-based bioplastics (e.g., bio-PP and bio-PE) can be recycled as their fossil-based counterparts. However, biodegradable bioplastics may contaminate recycling streams of other plastics and thus should be treated separately. Overall, this calls for innovative labeling, sorting and recycling solutions that empower consumers and ensure efficient processing.
Moreover, a key question remains: Can (and which) bioplastics fully replace fossil-based plastics while meeting industry performance requirements? Moreover, a pertinent question is whether the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) imposes challenges or even the end of bioplastics in packaging. Addressing this requires a multi-faceted strategy that includes:
Participants will gain valuable insights, practical strategies, and networking opportunities to navigate the evolving landscape of bioplastics and the circular economy. Key takeaways include:
